About

A bit about us

Il Melograno

A small Italian trattoria in Utrecht, run by two people who wanted a place of their own.

Our story

Two people, one small room

We opened Il Melograno on Twijnstraat in 2019. Marco had cooked in other kitchens for years and wanted his own. Sofia wanted a room where guests feel looked after, not processed.

So we kept it small. Twenty eight seats, wood tables, candles, and an open kitchen so nothing is hidden. Marco cooks. Sofia runs the front. That is the whole team most nights.

A wood table set by candlelight

Il Melograno means the pomegranate. A little Italian on the sign, a little Italian on the plate. Our guests like that.

Open kitchen

Watch Marco cook. Nothing is hidden behind a wall.

With the seasons

The menu changes through the year. We cook what is good now.

Italian wines

The list is all Italian, from €5.50 a glass. Ask Sofia.

Twenty eight seats

Small on purpose. By your second visit we know your name.

The kitchen

Cooked to order, every plate

Everything is made to order, so a busy night takes a little patience. That is the trade for food that comes out right.

Pour a glass, settle in, watch the kitchen. We are not a place to rush through.
